Kiln-Dried Comfort

The process of kiln-drying controls the amount of moisture in the wood products used to build your home.  This wood must be conditioned to the moisture content it will assume in the months and years after construction - otherwise it tends to shrink and twist.

Most manufacturers provide only air-dried logs, and buyers are often faced with conflicting information which can lead to confusion and uncertainty.  The simple truth is: kiln-drying is the only way to eliminate potential long-term problems in your home.  Kiln-drying produces uniform, stable building materials.  The process also kills insects and their eggs, reduces checking (cracking), and provides a host of other benefits - see the chart on below for more details.

Kuhns Bros.  Kiln-Dried Logs

Competitors' Air-Dried Logs

Shrinking / Twisting Pre-shrunk before milling and grading.  Uniform and stable.  Tight joints, level floors. Gaps often develop between logs.  Walls shrink, doors and windows can bind.  Frequent caulking often required.
Checking / Cracking Careful drying minimizes checking.  Occurs before grading and construction; defective logs graded out. More severe checking.  Occurs after construction as logs dry in the home.
Grading Any warped or twisted logs graded out by trained inspectors.  Logs stamped with NAHB certification of stress grade and moisture content. No moisture content standards or effective grading.
Insects All insects and eggs killed during the kiln-drying. Not sanitized.
Pitch Crystallized - does not seep to surface. Sap seeps to surface, especially around knots.
Preservative / Finishes Applied immediately following construction - absorb deeper, last longer. Usually not applied until at least one year after construction.  Less effective, allows for weather stain.
Weight More than 10,000 pounds of water removed.  Longest logs easily handled by two people. Much heavier, difficult to handle.

Kiln-dried components are standard with every home we make.  As part of our comprehensive Quality Assurance Program, we operate three kilns at our manufacturing headquarters to dry all of our logs, beams and purlins.  After drying, our wood products are graded by certified inspectors according to National Association of Home Builders standards.  All of our wood components are backed by a Lifetime Guarantee.  For more information on kiln-drying, please call Dave and Bonnie Speicher at (970) 946-4221, (970) 946-4665, or send an email to info@dreamloghomes4ever.com.
